What and how does the Chinese tariffs impact flooring cost?
The Chinese tariffs have been a huge topic this year so here are some tips on how to deal with it when dealing with flooring cost. When it comes to what is affected by the tariffs basically all building materials are affected. Unfortunately, the LVT category of flooring has been impacted the most since its dominated by Chinese products. The original plan for tariffs was to increase by 10 percent then by 15 from 2018 to 2019 but instead that plan was changed. The Trump Administration has indicated they will implement the 2nd tranche of tariffs on 5/10 which is another 15%.
This of course affects pricing for building supplies along with many others.
Here are some products affected by the now 25% tariff;

Food including produce, seafood, beans, nuts, etc.

The tariffs are taxes added to imported goods so consumers will pay more for products like the ones mentioned above. So unfortunately, prices will remain higher even if US and China read a trade deal. We will continue to share information as we learn of new details.
